This evening I had one of the best runs I've had all summer (this excludes the GLORIOUS run I enjoyed two Thursday's ago, where it rained torrential rains and created a Jurassic Parkesque setting, where we ran.... no, plowed.... through giant mud milky puddles, slid up and down hills, and dodged from side to side to avoid eminent T-Rex eating death).
I LOVE summer rainy runs!! Oh fuck, I love rainy runs all year! There's something so liberating about them. When I'm running through puddles, getting covered with mud on any exposed part of my legs, soaking wet from rain... I feel like such a kid! We had one of these magical runs this evening. It was rainy, it was super muddy, it was super fun.
It's a simple thing too. It requires nothing but the letting go of your care for clean shoes, clothes, and body. Actually, that in itself is an amazing feeling. To be fair, I spend upwards of $160 on my running shoes at least four times a year (that's at least $640 a year.... on running shoes :S). I am known among my running friends to protect my running shoes for as long as I can. But the fact is that they are JUST SHOES! They are worn outside, made for getting dirty; Dirt is outside, you can't avoid it! So to let go of this inhibition feels faaaaantastic (albeit doing it in muddy trails is taking it to a bit of an extreme). Note, the mud washes off. Why do I care?!
It's simple pleasures like this that can lift life up to better heights.
The timing couldn't be better for me :).
